As winter approaches, Minneapolis youth are excited for the start of the winter sports season. With an increase in teams throughout the city, there is an increased need for adult volunteer coaches, especially for youth basketball teams for both boys and girls at a variety of age divisions (ages 8-18).
What skills make a good coach? The desires to mentor youth, instill sportsmanship, and share your love of the game.
Kale Severson, center director at Luxton Park, is seeking head and assistant coaches for basketball and wresting teams this season. He will be organizing three to four basketball teams at a park which had no basketball teams in 2008. “It’s imperative that we find coaches for these teams to ensure that kids get a chance to play. You don’t have to be an expert; we have training and tools available and will support you at every step.”
Basketball practices begin the week of Nov. 30 and teams play eight to ten games from January through mid-March. The dates and times of practices (typically two per week) can be determined by the coach; games are played on Saturdays.
If basketball isn’t your game of choice, other winter sports include hockey and wrestling.
