Parkway Maintenance

The City of Minneapolis Parkway System was developed 125 years ago and has evolved to include thousands of acres of land and water, 43 miles of walking, off-street bicycle and skating paths and approximately 50 miles of parkways. Previous policy statements adopted by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) indicate a prioritized hierarchy for the parkway system that includes:
  • The environment
  • The pedestrian
  • The cyclist
  • The skater
  • The automobile

In addition, the documented objectives for the parkway system include:

  • Providing access to park lands.
  • Acting as a citywide linear green space and trail system.
  • Providing a continuous system of pleasant biking and driving routes.

The Parkway System is currently maintained jointly by the City of Minneapolis Public Works Department and the MPRB Maintenance Department. The MPRB ultimately owns and operates the system but Public Works provides some routine services:

Parkways: Routine Maintenance


Routine maintenance of the parkways is conducted by the Public Works Street Department. Routine maintenance includes:
  • Pothole and other patch and repair
  • Crack sealing and other preventative maintenance
  • Parkway sweeping and cleaning
  • Snow and ice control

Parkways: Pavement Rehabilitation


Rehabilitation or renovation of the parkways is performed by the Public Works Paving Construction Department. Rehabilitation includes deep milling and replacement of the pavement, select curb and gutter replacement and other structural work as needed. The planning and scheduling of this work is coordinated with MPRB staff..

Parkway and Parking Lot Lighting Maintenance


The MPRB parkways perimeter and traffic lights, along with parking lots, are maintained by the Public Works Traffic Department.

Perimeter Paths and Sidewalks Maintenance


Perimeter paths and sidewalks in the Minneapolis parks system are maintained by the MPRB Maintenance Section. Pathways are maintained on two-to-three day scheduled routes throughout the park system. These locations include:
  • Chain of Lakes Pathways
  • Minnehaha Pathway
  • River Road Pathways
  • District Pathways
